形態特徵

• Evergreen trees to 15 m high; trunks 0.6 m across; bark grayish-black or brown, furrowed; young branchlets densely yellowish-brown-tomentose.
• Leaves alternate, obovate to oblong, 3.5–6 cm long, 2–3 cm broad, coriaceous, glabrous in age, brown-hairy when young, acute to rounded at apex, rounded to cordate at base, margins serrulate at apex, midrib glabrous but hairy near petioles beneath, lateral veins 6–8 pairs; petioles ca. 0.5–0.6 cm long, densely light-brown-hairy.
• Inflorescence catkins or spikes, about 6 cm long. Staminate flowers 3.5 mm long, 2.5 mm broad; perianth 4–5-lobed, glabrous on both sides, hairy on margins; stamens 4–6 (–8). Pistillate flowers usually 1–2 clustered, enclosed in involucre, 2.5 mm long, 2 mm broad, short peduncled; styles 3, with enlarged stigmas.
• Cupules cup-shaped, 0.5–0.6 cm high, 1.5–1.7 cm broad; scales flattened imbricate;nuts ellipsoid, ca. 2–2.2 cm long, 1.3–1.5 cm broad, acute at apex, rounded at base, brown.

物候

Flowering from February to April; fruits maturing from October to November.

分布

• 台灣 : introduced and planted in Taipei city.
• 世界 : Distributed in China (E, S, SW & C), southern Japan, the Ryukyus and Korea.
